so i’ve been noticing an epidemic lately: the epidemic of the too-short “dress.” you know — the dresses that just cry out for a little more fabric to protect your poor, cold butt from flashing itself to the world.
now usually, i let these dresses go without a murmur. if a dress does not pass the “grazes my knee” test, why, i dismiss them summarily, with the discipline of an olympian. no, dress, you shall not tempt me! i cannot tell you how many cute dresses have been rejected this way — no, literally, i can’t, it makes me weep. but sometimes… well, sometimes, even olympians have their bad days, and sometimes, i buy dresses that i am CONVINCED i can make work.
much like this one:
coat, alloy.com. scarf, thrifted. hat, urban outfitters. dress, ana sui for target. cardigan, thrifted. skinny jeans, can’t remember for the life of me. boots, the gap.
yes, that is supposed to be a dress. A DRESS. i’m not an amazon by any means, but without jeans, if i bent over in that thing i could be arrested. there would definitely not be any loitering on street corners encouraged in that number, if you know what i mean. and yes, i already knew the length (or lack thereof) when i bought it, but… well… it’s really cute and well-made, and i love the dramatic details with the studs and felt. as long as i can figure out creative ways to make it more me and less of-the-night, i shall wear it with pride.
oh, and if you were wondering, this is a serena look from the ana sui for target collection supposedly inspired by gossip girl. it reads far more blair to me — there’s a severe lack of boobage, for one thing — but then i reread my previous paragraph, and of-the-night is definitely serena style. so there’s that.
coming up: a nifty thrift post in which i once again raid the depths of plato’s closet, and a couple of new challenge posts. i can feel your excitement.

[edited to add] OH HEY NOW. i forgot to introduce an important new addition to OHN — my new baby.
i mean, not a real one, obvi. but my new teeny tiny pretty little camera! my old one got bashed when gear check volunteers were a little throw-happy with my bag at the second 5k, rendering its joy stick useless and unresponsive. bf tried to fix it as best he could, but once precision equipment fails, it fails, y’know?
this is the canon sd780 is; it’s a 12 megapixel beaut that currently retails on amazon for $199 from an original price of $250, and i cashed in my debit card reward points for a $100 amazon gift card… so i paid $100. and it’s glorious and small and red and amazing. i’m no expert, but my photos seem to look a lot better now. highly recommended and all that jazz.

I love that dress! So cute!
And make it work you did! You look great, glad you took a chance and bought the dress, love the pop of blue with it.
I also like the pic of your new cam… you look like a cyclops, sticking out his tongue
Shorty-short skirts and dresses are an alarming trend indeed … but can be super useful for layering over leggings and tights. Just as you’ve done here, to great effect!
I remember you posting before that you bought this dress. Nice to finally see it on you! Luv the blue cardigan with it!
Did you animate slowflakes in to that first photo or am I hallucinating/my laptop doing something weird?
Possible hallucinations aside, I think you look super cute! The cardigan with that dress is kind of an unexpected combo, but it looks fabulous.
haha, you’re not hallucinating! it’s snowing on the whole blog, not just the photo
. christmas spirit and all that.
I have the same camera and I love it!
Also, I think that dress is actually totally adorable on you. I love it.
love the colors!
good to see your ‘what i wore’ posts again. =)
Welcome back! Wow, that camera is great – and the outfit is adorable too).
Awesome, I did not heard about that until now. Thanks!!
Hey lady, are you coming to brunch? I’d love to chat and eat and enjoy wintry Chicago with ya! http://betweenlaundrydays.blogspot.com/2009/12/chicago-blogger-christmas-brunch.html
What about layering a longer skirt or dress underneath a shorty one? Audi of geekthreads.blogspot does this so well, and recently had a tutorial about it.
I really like how you styled that dress!
I think it looks great! And the camera is a real cutie.
Love the red coat!!
Hey, I hope you are doing okay. I miss seeing your updates & challenges, and I hope that all is well with your family. Many hugs to you.
I just found your blog and read through a bunch of posts–hilarious!! I am also jealous of that dress. Love it!
just wanted to drop a note to see if you’re OK over there. i miss seeing updates on your blog, even though i wasnt a frequent commenter.
I so agree with you about the short dresses – I’m pretty short myself, but I keep taking things into the changing room only to discover that they’re more or less indecent on, and I couldn’t lean over even slightly when I’m wearing them. So annoying!
As Sal said, though, I do like short dresses/skirts layered over leggings or tighs – just as long as they’re not SO short I feel like I’m wearing a top!

gotta agree – there are wayyyy to many too-short dresses nowdays. and only somthing like 20% of the people who wear them, can totally pull it off.
your dress is truly something to be jeaulous for. just found your blog actually, and it`s so great! keep it up!

I’m so with you on this subject! I call it the “Barbie test” because my sister and I used to make sure our Barbie’s dresses covered their tushs when they bent over. Ha!
Miss you – are you ever coming back?
